A note from Office of EEO and Diversity

5886225374_74f0e5f677_oThank you for noticing our inadvertent omission in our NoFEAR training.  We intend to fix the NoFEAR CBT by inserting “including Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” in the “sex” basis on slide 3 of the CBT, and then remove the term “sexual orientation” from slide 18— Additional Protections.  The Agency wants to ensure that all employees are aware that the USPTO provides legal protection under the EEOC’s regulations and case law for discrimination claims involving sexual orientation and gender identity and processes them the way we do all complaints arising under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and the Rehabilitation Act.

Additionally, the narrator’s notes for the audio on slide 3 will be updated to state:

“A federal agency cannot discriminate against an employee or applicant with respect to the terms, conditions or privileges of employment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation based on stereotyping and gender identity), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, and retaliation.”

Thanks again for providing your thoughtful comments to help us best serve the USPTO community.

Wise Mocktini Event and Benefit for Suited for Change on November 5th

Click for event flyerHello,

I wanted to invite you all and your members to a charity event we are having next week.

The event is free and should be a good networker with leadership within the office. Additionally, we are collecting gently used or new women’s suits, jewelry, bags and shoes to help Suited for Change, a wonderful organization helping disadvantaged women get into or back into the workforce by providing them with professional attire in addition to many resources for supporting their transition to a job or career. A representative from the organization will be in attendance to talk about the business incubator they have launched, supporting the entrepreneurial efforts of some of their clients.

Hope you can join us!

Best,
Sarah Al-Hashimi
President of WISE

New Classifieds Section!

Photo of the ad section on a newspaperI’ve always thought we should have a place where we could advertise among us. For example if anyone needs a roommate and they’re new to the area, if someone is selling something or looking for local services. So here’s where the Classifieds come in! An LGBT friendly bulletin board for our group where we can share resources and even recommend our favorite businesses. I know some of us have additional occupations aside from our day jobs at USPTO, so feel free to list your real estate contact, craft making website, etc.

Of course, keep in mind these listings are as public as can be and content should remain tasteful within reason. Usually listing your e-mail address on a public site will return a lot of spam, so I recommend linking to your website, Facebook page or Google + and providing a contact form there. The newer Classifieds will be added to the Newsletter on a bi-weekly basis. These listings are free of charge, so let me know if there are any issues while posting. Enjoy!

warm regards,
